Hit And Run: One Killed, Another Seriously Hurt

KUCHING: A student of a higher learning institute from Sabah was killed while a local teen was seriously injured when their motorcycles collided with a lorry in a hit-and-run incident here yesterday.

The 4.15pm accident claimed the life of 20-year-old Ahmad Yahzam, who was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 17-year-old boy was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital for serious injuries.

The incident occurred at Mile 9, Jalan Matang when Ahmad was on his way back to his flat while the teenager was heading to his workplace at Kuching Waterfront.

Local residents said the duo was struck by a six-tonne lorry from the opposite direction after the driver had attempted an overtaking manoeuvre.

Instead of stopping, the heavy vehicle sped off, prompting a local teen to chase it using his motorcycle and signalling the driver to stop.

However, the lorry continued rumbling on until the pursuer gave up his chase, but not before he noted down the vehicle’s licence plate number.

Traffic police were present to investigate the fatal crash, and are making efforts to trace the runaway lorry.
